For the second year in a row, the Berkeley Tennis Club (those fabulous courts on the grounds of the Claremont Hotel) is hosting the National Girls' 18 Championships. The winner gets a wild card into the U.S. Open, so it's quite the prestigious event. But you wouldn't know it based on the local newspaper coverage. The rag of note, the much depleted San Francisco Chronicle, carries not one word of it, even as it lists the Beach Volleyball Tournament on the Embarcadero and the San Francisco/Bay Area Summer Basketball League as local events to attend. I'd say this is just an oversight, due to the scarcity of resources at the paper, but they did the same thing last year -- when they had more resources.
This is an opportunity to see some fabulous tennis by the highest ranked young women competitors in the country. You'll see some of them playing next year on the best college tennis teams and in satellite events. It's an amazing opportunity for all Bay Area girls and young women who follow tennis, or would like to play at the tournament level, to see a week's worth of great matches. Unfortunately, very few outside of the "insider" tennis bubble will get the chance because they won't hear about it.
For all those who thought Title IX helped level the playing field between boys and girls athletics, we're still waiting for the press to catch up in its coverage.
Bummer.

I had no idea you were a sports nut! Who knew? A knitter, a reader, political...how did you come to sports--must have played some basketball yourself?
Still no pics? Damn computers! Can't live with 'em, or without 'em!
